Anna Leigh Waters Shares Her Formula for Consistent, Powerful Serves

World No. 1 pickleball player Anna Leigh Waters, along with her coach and mother, Leigh Waters, recently sat down with pro player and content creator Kyle Koszuta to share some rare insights into Anna Leigh’s serving technique.

The mother-daughter duo is typically tight-lipped when it comes to their strategies, so this inside look was a special treat for fans and fellow players.

One of the key topics discussed was how to improve serve consistency and power.

Leigh began by explaining a subtle but crucial tournament tip: “Let the referee finish announcing the score before you serve,” she advised.

“Even though the rules allow you to start your motion as the ref speaks, you still have to make contact after the score is called. If the referee’s rhythm is off, it can throw off your timing — especially for someone like Anna Leigh, who’s fired up and ready to go.”

That interruption in rhythm can create a "hitch" in the service motion, making the serve feel awkward or rushed.

Waiting for the score to be fully announced allows for a smoother, more controlled motion — a small habit that can make a big difference.

Anna Leigh added that she treats her serve like a forehand stroke.

“Unlike tennis, where the serve is overhead, in pickleball, I visualize my serve as a forehand,” she explained.

“I think that helps because a lot of players struggle with their serve but are great at hitting forehands. It’s all about finding that fluid, natural motion.”

Leigh also emphasized the importance of having a clear target before serving. “Pick a spot, focus on it, and then serve.

There are so many distractions, and when it’s your turn, everyone’s watching — your mind can wander. But zeroing in on a target helps you focus and reset.”

To make serving practice more engaging, Leigh suggested using target drills. “It can get repetitive, so place some targets on the court.

Challenge yourself or compete with a practice partner. That’s what we do, and it really keeps things fun and effective.”

This approach has clearly paid off. Anna Leigh even recalled a tournament match where visualizing those targets from practice helped her deliver strong, accurate serves under pressure.

If you’re looking to improve your serve, consider incorporating these tips — from visualization to target drills — into your training. After all, learning from the best is always a smart move.
